A: This week I thought I would write about the French language school located near me. As most people already know this summer was spent traveling across France for work purposes and visiting my extended family. While being away it gave some insight to a few things which made me realize something. Not only did I get back home earlier than usual but I realized I had forgotten many of the small details that go along way towards making life comfortable.
So after a quick trip through Montreal, I decided that it was time to head south. For those who have seen pictures online they could see why the area was beautiful and that is because it was built around 100 years ago and as a result looks like a fairy tale town. There is plenty of nature surrounding St Augustins and it truly does feel special. We arrived late afternoon and found our apartment. After settling in we took a walk around town taking some photos and getting lost along the way. We ended up having tea and cake at a little shop called La Petite Maison de Café where they served amazing lemonade. After eating and chatting it turned cold outside and we headed inside to warm ourselves up and take advantage of the wifi.
We went in search for a place to study french since it seemed like the perfect environment. So we walked down Rue Principale and saw this wonderful store/french language center called Etudies Francais et Langue Universelle. They spoke with us and showed me the facility and told us everything and anything related to studying french. Their teachers really knew what they were talking about and were super nice and patient explaining to me everything I wanted to learn.
They offered classes ranging from basic conversation and grammar to advanced levels of vocabulary and pronunciation. All classes were taught by native speakers and had no problem understanding the nuances of english. We opted for level 3 which meant we learned french for 2 hours per day.

A: Private lessons can be effective for those who have had little exposure to conversational French prior to university and/or school. Private lesson sessions offer a tailored approach to language acquisition. They allow students to interact with native speakers through spoken interactions, rather than relying solely upon written materials. For this reason, they’re often recommended as prerequisites for university entrance exams like CAELI.
In addition to offering private courses, some schools provide group classes. However these types of programs typically focus heavily on grammar and vocabulary development rather than fostering fluency. Students who wish to learn conversationally should seek individualized instruction instead. As well, schools which offer group instruction frequently limit participants to fewer numbers. Group size varies widely among different institutions and locations. Some groups are small enough that instructors may speak only English and no other languages； this poses a problem if you’d prefer to practise speaking German, Japanese, or Spanish alongside native speakers in order to improve your overall level of competence. Others have several dozen people per class. Firstly though lets cover the basics. Why does it matter? Why not just speak English every day? Well you may ask….well because that isn’t the complete picture! Next Tip.......why am i spending 10 hours teaching him french words or grammar when he understands 99 times more english than me!? We’ve found that many parents struggle with bringing home knowledge from school and trying to impart concepts such as math problems onto children. Kids understand numbers in context so if mom asks “How high is this building?,” she needs help visualising the height without having to try figure it out herself. She wants her son/daughter to interpret the question instead of making his own assumptions but still retain the information from math class......a tutor can provide both. Learning doesn’t end after college either.....you’ll hear stories of grads (and now undergraduates themselves!) taking advanced courses in history and culture for fun. A: I love getting emails from parents who say things like “My child just got 100% on his exam after only 5 sessions because he realized he was able to speak well enough in French!” Or, my favourite, the kid gets a 90% and then says their teacher told them they had good pronunciation, but their tone wasn’t really correct yet.
But sometimes I get emails from kids who tell me, “I wish I could learn this language fast as some of my friends did.” Or even “Hey, I wanted to thank you for teaching me. My grade went way up in these past few weeks, thanks to your lessons!” These type of emails make me feel great； it makes my day every single time.
But why does it work? Why should a student be motivated to study a foreign language? When I studied German in high school, I knew I would use it one day in college, which made studying something else completely relevant to me. And I remember thinking “If someone will ever hire me, knowing German will come in handy, so learning it first seems logical.”
I believe that one reason people enjoy doing anything related to French is because they see themselves having real opportunities using that skill down the road, whether it’s speaking with business customers overseas, communicating with other Francophones back home, travelling to France someday, meeting native speakers, working in Montreal’s international industry, applying for jobs abroad, opening doors to higher level education classes, teaching French, writing professionally for publication online, being hired to teach French in schools, and becoming fluent enough to participate in conversations without feeling intimidated.
