FACTS ABOUT FRENCH IN GREATER SUDBURY ONTARIO AND SOUTHERN QUÉBEC REGION AREAS
In 2018, 2,837 francophones lived in Greater Sudbury, Canada.[1] Overall numbers continue to decline since 2011 from 4,638,[2] but francophone population growth continues to drop from 2014’s peak of 18,067 Francopolitans. As per 2017 census report published by Statistics Canada, Sudbury had 727 non-Canadians living among its residents, including 909 children under age 15.[3]
While many immigrants come to work and live in Greater Sudbury through government programs like New Canadians Settlement Plan[4], they cannot obtain official citizenship until after 8 years without Canadian provincial residency； which makes Quebecois easier options unless someone immigrates solely for education purposes. Therefore, only 11% of Greater Sudburites speak English as first language. [5]
According to 2016 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, 859 people reported French as mother tongue within Greater Sudbury area. A majority of those respondents spoke both languages fluently, however another 37 percent could communicate with some degree of proficiency in either language and 17 percent could neither understand nor speak French well enough to hold meaningful conversation.[6]
As of April 2019, total number of resident francophones who understand French as a primary language increased to 1,000 within Greater Sudburite region. Total number of resident francophones who speak French as a secondary language declined to 463, same amount of individuals who speak French less than “very well.” Meanwhile, 743 bilingual speakers remain within Greater Sudbury community.

A: In this article I would like to provide information about how the French program operates. We offer a comprehensive curriculum designed in conjunction with the Ministry of Education that provides instruction through the four stages of language development:
Stage 1 – Pre-school to Grade 2
Stage 2 – Grades 3 to 5
Stage 3 – High School Years
Stage 4 – University & Beyond

The French Language Curriculum is divided into six levels and covers grammar, writing, reading comprehension, vocabulary, listening comprehension and cultural topics including holidays, food and customs, sports and entertainment events, history, geography and art.
Students learn by engaging in real life situations. For example, they participate in discussions on current news articles, read novels written in French in order to increase fluency and practice speaking with other people. They practice their pronunciation of sounds, words, phrases and sentence structures by taking part in interactive exercises. Students learn the culture and heritage of Canada through games and role playing exercises and they develop confidence and self esteem through participation in community service projects. All of these experiences help students develop a love of learning and improve their communication skills which ultimately enhances academic achievement.

A: This article is in response to a request from one of my many loyal clients who wanted her kids to learn French in Greater Sudbury Ontario but she did not wish to pay hundreds of dollars per week through local schools for instruction. She knew I could offer something different than those schools offering a traditional classroom style approach, with her children spending several hours outside their normal class schedule per weeks and with some evenings spent away from home to complete sessions. After speaking with me and reviewing their academic history and learning profile I recommended taking full advantage of technology and having a Skype/Facetime webcam available 24hrs per days plus additional time each weekend. We quickly established that this worked well for everyone involved. As always, the client’s family came first, we had regular conversations via email, Facetime calls, texts and phone calls and we found that this was perfect for the time commitment that each parent desired while still allowing us ample personal interaction time together every few weeks. After discussing the program details and seeing the student’s results, the mother agreed to take action and enrolled. Within 7 short months, her son went from being average in his grade 5 French Language Arts exam to achieving near perfect scores (85%+). Not only did he achieve higher marks than ever, but his overall attitude towards learning improved dramatically as he began to enjoy himself rather than dreading it. His confidence grew tremendously through these experiences and he became self motivated enough to study independently in preparation for the highschool entrance exams. He excelled in everything and continues today having completed 3 years in college successfully in another province without repeating a single course.

There are several other great tools available online which aid children in mastering foreign languages such as Duolingo, Memrise, Rosetta Stone® and Lingoda, amongst others. Most of these programs target younger generations though and I don’t recommend them for older ones since adult brains aren’t meant to take in foreign languages with ease, yet. They should still try these apps to improve their ability to converse in another language, nevertheless.
