A: In this science lesson plan, I am going through an example lesson for Grade 4 Science with my students. They are studying ‘Life on Earth and Space’ and they have already learned about the solar system and gravity. We are starting to learn about the life cycle in biology class and I wanted to show them some examples of animals living on land and water.
I chose to teach them about the sea cucumber because it was the first animal that came across my mind. Sea cucumbers live under sand and mud and have many different types of body parts including tentacles, tube feet, stalks, suckers, fins, and other appendages. Some species of sea cucumbers can be found worldwide and they play a vital part in recycling nutrients back to the ecosystem. They eat algae which helps keep the ocean clean.
I also showed them videos online to help support what I had taught them during the lessons. One video that really stood out was called “Sea Cucumbers Eating Fish Eggs”.

A: Why does science matter? Because without understanding concepts like biology and chemistry, many kids won’t be able to reach their full potential academically. But it’s not just the academic side. Kids who love and excel at STEM subjects tend to lead happier lives. The key reason? They’re better prepared for work after high school graduation and career advancement opportunities than those who struggle with math and English. If we want these things for our community then we must ensure that every student graduates, gets good jobs, and leads fulfilling lives as productive members of society. We need this because it makes sense economically. For instance, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), “the average cost associated per hour for hiring an unemployed worker versus a job holder is $8 higher” compared to someone working part-time. Not only would this increase Canada’s GDP but it could improve overall health care costs to families as well which would mean increased taxes paid by everyone living in Canada. As Canadians we should strive to support the economy of Canada with quality education options available to everyone regardless of income level. I’d prefer to focus my efforts and funding towards helping children learn through the development of a strong foundation of mathematics and literacy instead of simply trying to push them further down the road once they graduate without proper instruction and preparation. If we take away their educational tools before they’ve mastered basic fundamentals it’ll be impossible to help anyone advance beyond elementary class levels of academics. At least once a week I’m approached and asked for guidance by parents struggling to get their kids ready for middle /highschool testing. This makes me feel great. When people ask me how I got started, it always reminds me of why I became passionate about teaching as a profession -- so that more kids across North America had access to highquality early childhood intervention programs and teachers who knew how to teach.
