A: There are many ways to improve math education, but few things help students grasp concepts like memorization and practice better than having a teacher who provides real world experiences outside class time. One way teachers can be doing just this is through their own projects.
By taking ownership and leadership roles in school wide initiatives such as STEM clubs, student government, athletics teams, and service organizations, teachers are given greater opportunities to explore and experiment beyond traditional educational methods.
Teachers should use these extracurricular roles to supplement existing lessons, rather than replace them. While some schools offer electives to encourage exploration outside classroom hours, they still fall short because they are usually taught separately, instead of integrated into core curriculum. Integrating project ideas into regular instruction sets gives students hands on experience that helps them apply lessons more effectively long after their classes end. Not only does integrating project work enhance teaching strategies, such as lesson planning and assessment, but students also see a tangible outcome which motivates them to continue practicing until they master material.

Math Club Project Idea #1: Using Graph Paper/Pencil Drawing to Model Functions
In Grade 8 mathematics courses, most functions are covered via graphs. As part of an investigation, I created a function graphing calculator. Students used pencil drawings and graph paper to visualize various equations such as y = sin x. They then traced those lines onto whiteboard paper. Once completed, students shared their findings via Power Point slideshows to demonstrate how these line patterns represent particular mathematical relationships between variables. By allowing students to interact with technology as well as the physical environment around them, I gave them the tools necessary for deeper understanding of basic algebraic principles. At times during group discussions, students had difficulty explaining why certain values did not match a specific equation’s output.
