A: I’m back again for my 2018 “How to get A’s” update for Private Lessons/Private Grade 7 Mathematics Class. My plan is still the same and I’ll be going through every lesson and key concept this summer once school gets started in September (hopefully!)

Key Concept #1: Teaching is Learning
When teaching someone anything you must first learn that information yourself. It takes practice and dedication to master whatever skill you’re trying to teach another person because ultimately you are being taught something in addition to demonstrating it. Students often tell me they felt a bit self conscious about asking questions or doing assignments because they were afraid they weren’t paying attention since they wanted to listen and absorb the information instead, but then what was happening inside was actually far worse than anyone could imagine. Their brain had already processed the knowledge, just like I would expect mine would after studying that material all day long. It becomes a matter of applying yourself, making certain mistakes along the way, and recognizing the value of experience gained versus the grade book. When people ask why some teachers seem “so good”, “know it all,” or “smarter than everyone else”. They must remember that these people have spent years mastering the information necessary to become great educators that know exactly which topics to focus on based upon the needs and abilities of every student. All things considered this level isn’t something a teacher can replicate at home any faster in less amount of time without having studied the materials themselves. For us to achieve top marks we’ve got to put in the effort ourselves. If your children complain of feeling bored during class simply remind them they’re learning something valuable and they most certainly are and they’ll feel a whole lot better knowing they aren’t completely wasting their time.
